What is Active Release Technique?

ART is a soft tissue treatment method addressing injuries to muscles, tendons, nerves, and surrounding connective tissue. It combines deep tissue manipulation with guided movement through a joint's full range of motion.

What It Does

  • Reduces scar tissue formation
  • Relieves muscular tension
  • Corrects muscle imbalances
  • Addresses nerve entrapments
  • Restores range of motion

How It Works

Each session functions as both an assessment and a treatment. The provider manually evaluates texture, tightness, and movement quality in muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Treatment applies targeted tension while the patient performs specific movements.

Treatment Protocols

ART utilizes more than 500 distinct movement protocols, enabling providers to pinpoint and address each patient's specific dysfunction. Treatment plans are individualized, not standardized, and integrate well alongside other chiropractic modalities.

Provider Certification

All chiropractors at Bayshore Chiropractic maintain current annual ART certification.

Active Release Technique (ART) FAQs

  • What is Active Release Technique (ART)?

Active Release Technique is a specialized hands-on treatment used to relieve tension, scar tissue, and restrictions in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. It combines precise pressure with guided movement to help restore normal function and reduce pain.

  • What conditions can Active Release Technique help treat?

ART is commonly used for neck pain, back pain, shoulder problems, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, sports injuries, plantar fasciitis, and repetitive stress injuries. It may also help improve mobility and flexibility.

  • Is Active Release Technique painful?

Most patients experience mild discomfort during treatment as tight or restricted tissue is addressed, but the therapy should not feel unbearable. Many patients notice relief and improved movement shortly after treatment.

  • How is ART different from massage therapy?

While both involve soft tissue work, ART is more targeted and movement-based. The provider applies specific tension while the patient actively moves the affected area to help break up adhesions and restore proper motion.

  • How long does an Active Release Technique session take?

Treatment times vary depending on the condition being treated, but most ART sessions are incorporated into a regular chiropractic or rehabilitation appointment and typically last between 15–30 minutes.

  • How many ART treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on the severity and duration of the condition, as well as your activity level and overall health. Some patients improve within a few visits, while chronic issues may require a longer treatment plan.

  • Can athletes benefit from Active Release Technique?

Yes. ART is widely used by athletes to help improve performance, reduce muscle tightness, speed recovery, and prevent injuries caused by overuse or repetitive movement.

  • Is Active Release Technique combined with other treatments?

Yes. At Bayshore Chiropractic, ART is often combined with chiropractic adjustments, stretching, corrective exercises, massage therapy, and rehabilitation techniques to help patients achieve the best possible results.
